On the theory that you can’t really know where you’re going unless you know where you started, for the first phase of Futures, the Steering Committee commissioned several background papers in order to lay the foundation for future consultations and action.

The background papers offer up snapshots of several areas: the demographics of the legal profession in Canada; the state of the research in the area; the changing demands by clients, and how they affect legal services delivery. We also took a look at what innovative thinking is already being implemented in Canada and around the world.

Then, the Steering Committee sought out the input of thought leaders: the U.K.’s Richard Susskind, an expert in legal futures, legal consultant Bruce MacEwen in the U.S.; and founder Simon Fodden in Canada, to see what they have to say about where the profession stands, and what next steps it might take.
