Business Structures and Innovation

There is a constant tension in law between its business side and its service side, and balancing the dual priorities of access to justice and the bottom line.

While the market is not everything, it is the skeleton upon which the delivery of legal services is structured, and is therefore open for examination – whether there are better ways of delivering legal services, and what those might be; whether changes to the regulatory system would be valuable and if they are, whether they’d get the necessary buy-in from the profession. Alternate billing arrangements? How about bringing non-lawyers and para-professionals under the tent? Non-lawyer ownership of firms? Hiring freelancers? Document automation? It’s all fodder for the debate.
